This activity was modified from
Project Wild by Kelly Riedell for high students in
Biology class at Brookings High School.
We have worked very hard on Activities, Powerpoints/games/worksheets, etc to make this a
resource for our students. If you are using our materials, please give us credit

HOW MANY BEARS CAN LIVE IN THIS FOREST? |
Things you will need:
1 die/ student
2 teddy bears
1 pair crutches
TO DO AHEAD: \
1. Print out food token cards
using different colored paper for each type of food.(nuts, berries, insects,
etc.)
2. Print out tally sheets and worksheet ?'s
3. Use chart to figure out how many of each kind of token you will need for your class. Each “bear” needs 80 lbs (points) but some will get more and some will get less and “not survive” .
4. Place food tokens in small piles on desks/counter top around classroom “ecosystem”.
PLAY THE GAME:
3. Students “compete” for food by moving around room and rolling dice to win food tokens. They should try to get a “balanced diet” by collecting different colored tickets.
4. One student is the “mother bear” and must collect twice as many tokens to feed her babies (Give her 2 teddy bears to hold while she collects)
5. One student is the
“injured bear” and uses crutches to move around.
(Borrow from your athletic dept or get some cheap ones at Goodwill).
Injured bear is at a disadvantage and can only win the roll if he rolls a 5 or 6.
6. After all the tickets have been collected, have students fill out their tally sheet and answer questions. This leads to great class discussions and the students really like it.
